Finding Keywords Is Only Half The Battle!
Tuesday, December 20th, 2005I’ve created a new category here due to visitor demand. Everyone wants to know about my keyword research secrets, so I will start sharing them little by little. I just wrote the following article tonight for those of you who are new to the keyword research game or those of you who are stuggling with it. Feel free to publish as long as you keep my resource box intact!
Enjoy….
Finding Keywords Is Only Half The Battle!
Finding keywords seems to be hard for a lot of people. Hopefully in this article I can make it easy on you with two free tools.
The first tool is DigitalPoint.com suggestion tool at www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion
Once you get there you can enter in the keyword you would like to research. In this example, let’s use the keyword phrase weight loss. This is a very competitive niche, but I like to start out big and find the good little niches to focus on.
Wow! The keyword phrase weight loss is a competitive niche.
Wordtracker states that there are 5,980 searches a day done on the keyword phrase weight loss.
Overture states that there are 26,861 searches a day done on the keyword phrase weight loss.
There’s a bit of a difference there, huh? Well a lot of people state that Overtures searches aren’t accurate because so many people use it as a search tool. Wordtracker is not totally accurate because it only uses search results from certain search engines. So where do you get an accurate reading?
In my experience if you multiply the number of searches by 8 using Wordtracker’s results, and then find a number between that total and Overture’s total, you will get a fairly accurate number of daily searches. You’re not going to get an exact amount from either of them. I don’t know of any tool that gives you an exact up to the minute number.
So, 8 x 5,980 = 47,840 ( 8 x Wordtrackers daily search number.)
Now take Overture’s search results, which is 26,861 + Wordtrackers 47,840 and you get 74701 Divide this number by 2 and you get 37,350 daily searches on the keyword phrase weight loss.
See why so many people get confused doing this?
Well we know for sure that the keyword phrase weight loss is going to be way too competitive. What are some of the other search results that are coming up?
The next keyword that I see that might be profitable is weight loss surgery, but it’s getting about 2800 searches a day. I figured it out by using the above math example. So let’s drill down a bit further in this niche. When I do, I find the keyword phrase lap band weight loss surgery. Again using the math example above I see it gets a little over 200 searches a day. For me that is perfect. Others will argue that’s not enough searches, but my rule of thumb is nothing under 100 searches a day or over 500 searches a day as my niche.
Now that I have found my niche, and since I am going to be using Google Adsense to make money with my niche, I need to make sure that ads will actually show up on my site.
Again, the DigitalPoint.com website has something for you here also. www.digitalpoint.com/tools/adsense-sandbox
This tool will show you what ads could show up on your site if you built a site around that key phrase.
My niche is now lap band weight loss surgery, so I would enter that into the search box. A ton of ads just showed up, so it looks like I may have a profitable niche on my hands.
The last step is finding out how much competition you will be competing against and if you can even compete. This time I’m going to use a tool from NicheBot.com you can find it at www.nichebot.com/kd/
I type in lap band weight loss surgery. The results for this keyword phrase aren’t so great. There’s quite a bit of competition, but not as much as in the other keywords I drilled through. I can’t drill down any further here, so I now have two options.
1. Start all over and find a different niche.
2. Go with what I have and try to beat the competition
With a lot of backlinks, a little on page SEO, I shouldn’t have problems, so I think I’m going to go for it.
Now you still don’t know how high the bids are on your keyword phrase. There are tools out there that will tell you the bids on your keywords, but that would take a whole other article to talk about. Hopefully this has put an end to some keyword confusion out there!
