Guru Bashing Madness

By LizTomey | June 20, 2007

Last night I promoted a product that had some guru bashing in the sales letter. (You can see what I’m talking about at ) I had just gotten off the phone with my friend Keith Wellman and we were talking about all those sales letters out there that bash gurus and say how they are hiding this and that from you…

First off, there’s nothing to hide. The secret is, that there is NO big secret…

Second off, what makes a guru bad?

Someone who is an expert in their niche and teaches others about that niche. I do that… Does that make me a guru? Does that make me some kind of monster?

I certainly hope not because I work VERY hard to educate people in my niche and teach them how to make money in my niche. I give away a load more information than I charge for, and give out way more content to my list compared to promotional content, so just why are gurus bad?

I’ll tell you why…

Because it makes good promotional copy, and that’s it.

Yes, there are bad people out there, and there are people who are going to rip you off, but most well known gurus aren’t going to do that. They couldn’t even if they wanted to because they are too well known. It would ruin their business. If they were bad people to start off with, they would have never become gurus.

Do you think Mike Filsaime, Michael Campbell, Jo Han Mok, Jimmy D Brown, and the likes would have all made it had they been cons. Well, they are all gurus. Probably at least one of them that you follow and listen to. These are 4 of my all time favorite marketers and I’m sure you have your favorites.

List them and tell me how many are cons and are trying to keep secrets from you…

Now think of people who have really ripped you off. Probably those people who bash the gurus!

So before you start guru bashing the next time, think of what you’re really saying and maybe express yourself a little better next time!

Most gurus are bad because they are not gurus at all. I have been doing this a long time. One of the things I have observed is people seeing a success in some moderate way and immediately deciding to be a guru. For example, I know a woman who sold about $60K worth of a product online one month due to a good advertising opportunity. She immediately started selling services as a internet marketing expert. As far as I know, she never made a dime selling anything online outside of that one short period. In fact, she filed for bankruptcy less than a few years later.

Yet she was a “guru.” Oh yes, there are gurus out there everywhere and some are quite good–just be careful when picking one.

I absolutely agree with you on this one Liz. It seems like every second product that comes out on market lately is doing guru bashing in one form or another. It became popular and probably profitable but I think people tend to forget that it is also immoral!

While I never paid for any big ticket programs - I have learned and still continue to learn from people like Jimmy D. Brown, Mark Hendricks, Gary Ambrose and still get plenty invaluable information from their email (even though they never intended it :) ). To me “guru bashing” phenomena is equal to dumping dirt over your favorite teacher. I was blessed in this life to have many good teachers and at least 2 I consider - Great Teachers. However profitable it might be - I refuse to participate in “guru bashing” and I don’t even promote those products.

    Just my $0.02
