My Last Stand On Duplicate Content
By LizTomey | August 21, 2007
Constantly I am emailed by people flipping out about duplicate content. I am so tired of this topic. Really I am… I have written articles about it, made blog posts about it, had long conversations about it, forum debates, and more. So this post is my last stand on duplicate content. Unless something changes with duplicate content issues, I wont talk about it anymore.
See, I told you I’m sick of it.
So here are my final thoughts and words on duplicate content…
In short I think that duplicate content was created to create a new market of buyers. The hissy fit got started with the first few “duplicate content products”. You know all those content spinners that came out of no where. The whole duplicate content deal is nothing more than a scare tactic to get people to buy products that they think will keep them out of trouble with Google…
BS…
First, Google makes there own rules whenever they feel like it. What is okay today is not okay tomorrow. And then for fun sometimes they’ll just change a rule here and there ever so slightly to see how many people they can send into a hissy fit.
I’m not scared of Google. Take my PR, and whatever else you want to do. I’ll still make money…
Relying on Google is what you should really fear…
Now on the flip side of all of that, there is a thing called duplicate content out there, but it doesn’t come from putting PLR articles on your site. It doesn’t come from using a template that you got from www.oswd.org Duplicate content is more like those cookie cutter sites. The ones that are exactly the same and can be found being sold around the net for pennies.
Adsense template sites, turnkey cookie cutter sites…. That’s duplicate content.
Building a content site with PLR articles and a template is NOT duplicate content. I rank in the top 5 of Google for hundreds upon hundreds of keywords for hundreds of different sites. ALL my sites use PLR articles that have NOT been re-written. I haven’t just tested this once, I have tested it over and over again.
Stay away from crap cookie cutter sites, build good looking sites with good content, and you’ll have nothing to worry about…
So before that next duplicate content freak out, take a deep breath, and realize that duplicate content isn’t all people make it out to be…

I totally agree about relying on Google. And I think people do out of complacency. Google is a fair weather friend, and they will drop you anytime they want.
But, when you first start a website, Google ignores you. Then after a while, you start to rank and your visitation rate increases, and you think all is good in the world.
That’s when most people stop doing all the promoting they did when they started, which makes it all the worse when Google falls out of love with you.

Hi Liz,
As always great article. I haven’t tested the PLR articles part so thanks for sharing!
I think that what people get confused about is difference between duplicate content and supplemental results. Duplicate content on same site = bad, as it will put your site or blog into supplemental results but I agree with your point on uniqueness of the article to your site should be OK. I actually wrote entire article where I shared a very simple and yet effective technique that removed all my pages from supplemental results on Google

I think the point about the Supplemental Index is valid. Part of getting maximum traffic is making your funnel as wide as possible. For myself, article submission is a big part of building site visibility and page rank. And I’ve found I get significantly better results using a simple tool called Artemis Pro.
It does 2 things for me:
1) Seriously leverages my article submission process
2) Uses a very simple idea to submit tons of non-duplicate (read: non-Supplemental Index) articles that I’m not ashamed to put my name beside (read: non-reshuffled garbage).
Keep up the good work! HL
